Government Block

Find a current event article that you can tie to one of the six principles of the Constitution. Remember, use the definitions and examples we talked about in class to help you find articles. For example, finding an article about a tax increase could work for the principle limited government.

Write a paragraph summary of the article for the discussion board. Include the principle your article ties to and the website where you found your article.

Remember, when posting, leave your name so I can assign the points to your grade. Click on the comment button to leave your response. Responses are due by Monday, September 17 at 1:30 p.m.

In the current event I researched, I found a story about President Bush's actions with troops over in Iraq. The story tells about how democrats want approximately 30,000 troops removed from overseas while Bush wants to leave them there. In Hilary Clinton's opinion, she states that it's "too little, too late." I disagree with her opinion. We should indeed send troops home to where they belong because we have had them there too long and too many of them are still being killed by roadside bombers. We've established a government where they can contribute to Iraq without our help.-Alden Madsen

My article is about the declaration President Bush made on September the 8th about "a disaster existing in the state of North Dakota". Federal aid was ordered to supply rebuilding the damaged areas by severe storms and tornadoes on July 15th 2007.
It says that federal help is available to state and local govts certain non-profit organizations on a cost-sharing basis to repair or replace items damaged by the weather.
additional designations will be made at a later date if requested by the State govt.

The curent event article I did was about tax increase and how it is not a good thing. Also senate republicans pushed for giving voters the option pf raising the sales tax from 6 to 7 percent. if approved it would have replaced any temporary tax increase approved by legislators.

The article i read was a story about the new law in California banning teenagers from using cell-phons while driving. The California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed the law on Thursday. Adults will be able to hands-free devies but due to the popularity of 'texting' minors are not allowed to use them. Accorind to MSNBC the law wont take charge until July 1 next summer. This also is going against the older drivers. The first offense will be a $20 fine with a second offense being $50. This is connected with the government by the State Legislature making this new law

Judicial review is a very important principal when it comes to the constitution. Judicial review is what empower the judicial branch to determine whether a law passed by the legislative branch or actions of the executive branch conform to the constitution. The article I found was about Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School District. Parents of some of the students signed a petition because they believed that the school district was placing the students based on race, which violates the 14th amendment. In the article, I saw how judges take in account many things including many other cases having to do with the 14th amendment. They seemed very fair and looked at both sides of the argument to see if the constitution was being violated. If it was not for the principal of judicial review, there may be some unconstitutional things happening.

For my current event article I read about the Path to Presidency. The article talks about the up coming elections, and what it takes to get elected to become president. This article represents Popular Sovereignty because it demonstrates that the people have the power to govern themselves. The election demonstrates Popular Sovereignty because the people have the power to vote to elect the President of the United States. The article also goes on to talk about the primaries and caucuses.

The article i read is about Michael B. Mukasey bieng named to replace alberto gonzales as attorney general. Mr. Mukasey was chosen because Bushs Aids say that Mukasey has impeccable credentials and is a strong law-and-order jurist. They also said that he would restor confidence in the Justice Department. Mukasey is entering dangerous territory as he is the 10th attorney general under bush. we all hope that he does good while he is in this possision. Well thats all i have to say about that.

today i read about an article that said "Bush names new attorney general" and as i was reading it i came accross a line that said "The President's nomination for attorney general must be approved by the senate". that reminded me of the Seperations of Powers Principle. in order to pass something or do something they have to look to other branches of the government to approve it.

For my current event I found that democratic presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton would like to have a health care plan that would cost the federal government around $119 billion and require all Americans to have health insurance. I believe this is very important. Health should be one of the main priorities for our people today. This could soon be a law, which would be connected with the government by the State legislative making the law. Taylor Gee:)

The article I found in the newspaper was about Michael B. Mukasey to become the new attorney general. President Bush will nominate Mukasey to take over Alberto Gonzales position. Mukasey was a retired federal judge. How this relates to the six principles of constitution is by checks and balances. I found this article in the Omaha World Herald paper on September 17, 2007. In the omaha world hearald there was an article that had to do with limited government. President Bush wants congress to pass a law allowing the government to listen in on phone calls to see if they are terriosts. This can be done without a warrant.
