Government Block

After reading the article about the potential problems with voting machines and some states requiring voter identification cards, describe your feelings about voting. Do you feel that your vote is safe and counts in the United States? Are there places across the country where people should feel threatened by electronic voting and photo id cards?

Respond to this post twice. Your fist post will be due by the beginning of class on Thursday.

Your second post will be due by the beginning of class on Monday. For the second post, read through your classmates response. Whose opinion do you agree with? Whose do you disagree with? Discuss why in a professional manner.

Remember, when posting, leave your name so I can assign the points to your grade. Click on the comment button to leave your response. Look for the message in green at the top after submitting a post. Save a copy on Word or print out your post just in case it doesn't go through.

Yes i fell like my vote is safe, because it would take a long time to try and hack in to the computer.
Some people in big cites are felling threatened, because they really don't need a id card what would be the point of getting one if you are not going to use it. Maybe they should get an picture id card for it or something like that.

I think that the voting system in the United States is flawed. Actually I believe it to be flawed beyond all recognition, though it's not the system's fault, it's the fault of the voter's who can't keep up with the system.
With the problems in Florida with all of the double-punched tickets you can blame it on the senoir majority living in that state. People who can't use the computers to vote need to see if that is what they have to vote with in their state or town and learn a little more about it. That is what the voter helper's are hired for.
I actually feel that the voter cards are a good thing to have. I won't have to hear about all the voter fraud and maybe it would detour some of the double-punch voters in Florida from voting.
I don't feel that voting is safe and even with voter id cards it still will not be. I don't think anyone in the country should feel threatened by the voter id cards except maybe illegal aliens who were voting before who now won't be able to.

Voting for future presidents, governors, mayors, or even school board members is important. Every vote counts in any type of election. However, voting isn't the most interesting or exciting thing to do but should be taken seriously. I do think voter identification cards should be mandatory by all states in the U.S. I do think my vote is safe and will be counted when I am eligible to vote. I think the places where people are most threatened by photo id cards are big cities. Typically, people from cities don't have driver licenses because they travel on buses or subways rather than driving. Photo identification cards protect all people from fraud and eliminates others from using your personal information.

I think the electronic voting is an unsafe thing because it could easily be messed with people could change the votes if they wanted to It could have a mess up and the votes would never even matter so they might have to vote over

I think that voter i.d. cards have their benefits and their disadvantages. I think that if the government was to make voter i.d. cards mandatory they should provide the cards for free. The only problem would be to provide cards to those who do not have transportation to pick up the card.
I did not realize that there was a problem with voter fraud. I don't think that the way voting is conducted right now is very reasonable. There has been so many problems with the machines that certain states use to count the votes. For instance in Florida they had such a problem with the "hanging chad". The older people had a problem with knowing where to punch the holes. I think that we have the oppurtunity to vote, but the voting process may hinder if our vote counts.
I think there are places where electronic voting and i.d. cards are going to be somewhat threatening. People may be intimidated by the new technology. With electronic voting you are not allowed to go back on your vote once you clicked "yes." Also with electronic voting the vote can be lost. I think we do need a better way to vote, but until we come up with a way to do that, there will also be concerns about the voting process.

I believe this is a serious issue that our world faces today. We need to stop and pay attention to this problem and see if our democracy is working. I’m not able to vote, but if I was I wouldn’t feel safe. With out voter I.D cards anyone can vote as someone else. Anyone could hack in and change votes or even the votes could be lost if it was electronically.

After reading the articles I believe that my vote is not safe in the United States. I think this because we have not found an efficient was to make sure most of the votes go through the right way. I also think that people should be skeptical of the electronic voting methods. The computer can be tampered with or have glitches. The United States needs to come up with a safer computer program before the US uses computer for voting. Another thing I think is that the voting ID cards should not be used. I think this because not everyone has or can get an id. Also it may decrease our voting turn out and I don’t think it is as big as we need it.

I think its a good idea to have photo ID cards because there are people out there who are taking dead peoples names and using them to vote. I know that theres poor and black people out there who dont have them but im pretty sure that we could at least get them some kind of idenification. I dont think that votting on a computer or what ever is a good idea because people can hack on and change the votes but yet at the same time people are takeing the paper votes away so that they dont get counted so no matter what you do people are going to do something to mess it up.

The new voting regulations in the United States, such as the electronic voting machines or the touch screen computers to vote, are too much electronic in my opinion.
Hackers will have an easy game with manipulating the votes for the presidential elections in 2008. Once hacked into the system and decoded it, those people will have all the power about the outcome of the elections, and the votes the citizens gave will have no worth at all. As the article said, the computers don’t produce any savings of the votings and don’t print it out or save it on an extra flash drive to recount it. So what will the officials do if something goes wrong? It would be even worse than the disaster in Florida in 2000. I personally wouldn’t feel save if I couldn’t see what happens to my vote after feeding a machine with it.
Why do you even need such a complicated and expensive way to vote? A sheet with the names of the candidates and its parties on it is enough and easy to understand for everyone. It improved for years and it works in many different countries without problems.

Although I have yet to vote i know when i do vote i will have mixed emotions about it. I will be confident in my true answer but not so confident that it will be my final answer. In a town like Shenandoah I believe that no voter fraud would happen but in the city it does happen and needs to be stopped. One way to do this would be to use the i.d. cards. By using i.d. cards nobody could steal your identity. I would feel very skeptical using a electronic voting system due to the easy hacking from others.

my feelings about voting. I feel that if we use a machine to count our votes we risk the chance of them crashing and loosing all our votes. I also feel that when we vote we should be able to vote how we want so there are no problems.

After reading the articles I don’t feel safe and that my vote won’t count in the United States. Those reasons for that are someone overseas or even in the States can hack into the computer system and change all of the votes to have the person they want to win, win the election. Also ID cards are and aren’t a good idea. It is a good thing so that someone can’t steal someone’s identity. For example if someone past away someone could go and say they were that person. It is a bad idea for people that can’t afford to pay for the ID card. Everyone should be able to vote if they are a citizen of the United States. They should be able to voice their opinion. There are places across the country where people should feel threatened by electronic voting and photo ID cards because if they are black or poor. That is because the poor can’t afford to pay for the poll tax and they should be able to vote if they are a citizen of the United States.

I think my vote is safe because they are in government hands. I think that it will be safe because it goes in to a box or in a machine. I think some people would be affended cuz some people dont have to have id cards.

After reading the articles i feel that my vote is not safe. However i do feel that my vote counts. In any election you should feel as though your vote counts because your vote could be that one difference within the election. I do not feel there is one area safe than another.

After reading the articles in class I feel that when i vote that my vote will not be as safe as it could be. Although I believe that the government is trying as hard as they can to keep elections safe. One way that I think should be used is the voter i.d. cards. I do not feel that one area of the United States is threatened more than any other part.

After reading everyone else’s opinions, I still don’t think that my vote is completely safe. Votes can be tampered with or even thrown out if something goes wrong, and I want to be sure that my vote counts. Also I still think that electric voting should not be used until the United States find an efficient way to program the computer, so the people know their vote is counting. Although my opinion has remained the same for how safe I feel about my vote and computer voting, it has changed when it comes to the voter id cards. I now agree with the people who say that they are a good thing to help prevent some voting fraud. I also think the government should provide them to people for free when they register to voter. I think that if they make them mandatory they should make sure everyone can get one and by providing them they can ensure that everyone can get an id. Voting is important and everyone who does vote should feel safe and have the opportunity to participate.

I agree with Michael on how he thinks the 2008 elections will be. He did a good job of putting my thoughts down and wording it in his own view. I greatly agree that computers will be a nightmare to say the least. We should just stick to the way that we vote now and stay out of the hassle of using technology.

For my second blog I am replying to Shaun Webbers comment. I agree with what he is saying. If we use a computer to vote there is a higher chance of losing the votes. The computer can crash, then the whole election will be screwed up. We do need to find a better more efficient way to vote. The process of voting needs to become more advanced.

I disagree with Alden in the point that citizens of big cities are threatened by photo id cards because they don’t have driver licenses. I think most of the people are allowed to drive, it is just the question, if they do. A problem in the bigger cities is the poverty and that those people cannot afford id cards, and so they would be excluded from voting.
I agree with Megan, that the electronic voting machines are too complicated for older people and that they will have problems with it again. You should give people in the States different opportunities in which way they want to vote.

i agree with shaun's blog. it does scare me a little knowing the computers could crash at anytime. i also agree with taylor i think it would be a good idea to have a voter id card because i wouldnt want someone stealing my identity

After reading other peoples opinions I agree with many other students. I feel that when I vote that my vote will not be as safe as it could be. I wouldn’t want to feel that insecurity as I'm sure many others agree. I also believe that the U.S. should band ID cards because not everyone is capable of getting them.

I agree with alden that people in bigger cities probably have drivers licence they have some sort of ID so they should not feel threatened that the canot vote I think that some people just use the ID problem to get out of voting because they think they can vote even if they can't that is how they can skip around the law of voting

After reading other blogs on this assignment, I feel that my opinion has changed a little. I still believe that identification cards for voting should be held mandatory before placing your vote at a poll. However, I don't think my vote is safe. You think about our society today and how people try to "hack the system" so to speak. Security has always been an issue in our government and probably always will. Why do think they hired secret service agents to protect our presidents. Other than that issue, I agree with everyone else.

Even with reading all the other posts I still think that voting cards would be a good idea. If we really want our vote to count then they have to make sure it is really our vote. Although I now agree with some of the other posts who don't think our vote is safe. With all this stuff posted on the internet how do we know if it won't be hacked into and changed.

I think that it is good that we vote. I also think it is safe that we can vote here because we know everyone here.
